Haven't had chance to listen to the podcast yet, but I have to quickly say that I think After Hours is an underrated gem. Admittedly I've only seen it once, but it totally caught me by surprise and I really enjoyed it. I think it should be more highly regarded in Scorcese's back catalogue.

Totally got shouted down and cut off, but are you guys kidding me? You think David Patrick Kelly or Mercedes Ruehl are names in Hollywood? Yeah, you recognize their face when you see them, but no one knows their name. They're people that would be on the "hey, it's THAT guy!" web site.

The inclusion of Cheech and Chong is what went wrong for me with After Hours. I really liked what was going on in the movie as it slowly gets more and more crazy of a night for Dunne. But at some point it just gets too whacky for me. Cheech and Chong stealing him and then him falling off the truck right in front of the office was just too convenient and a lazy way to get to the ending.

But whoever compared him to Larry David was right on (I think it was Jay). With Larry David, I spend the entire episode either shaking my head and thinking, "Oh Larry, what the hell are you thinking!?" or I'm thinking, "Larry, you are so right and these people are just pretentious assholes!" I felt the same way with Paul. He makes some ill decisions an does some questionable things, but the people around him are equally vague and tormentative (Teri Garr, O'Hara, the night club bouncer, Arquette, Forentino). They purposely mess with his head. The only person nice to him in the whole movie is the bartender.

Which certainly lends to the theory that After Hours is an extended existential nightmare of the main character. Punishment perhaps for simply being the shallow working drone he is.

Mercedes Ruehl is certainly a name in Hollywood, though she's considered a bigger star as a stage actor. As an Oscar winner and a Tony winner she's kind of a big deal.

Kelly you can argue isn't more than a character actor in Hollywood but he's also very well known for his stage work and he's pretty well regarded for his music as well. Just because he's butt fugly doesn't mean he isn't a damn good actor, which was more of the point I was trying to make that The Warriors cast was actually pretty loaded with talent even if it isn't considered A-list talent.

Why is Marina on this cast?
"I thought it looked cool. That's all I have to say". There were way too many people on this one and only a few contributing anything worthwhile. Still good choice on the movies. Tony Scott's remake will be a piece of shit and will have no interest in emulating the uniforms of the gangs from the original.

During your discussion of "The Warriors" you guys discuss some other films of Walter Hill but nobody mentioned "Southern Comfort". How can you leave that out of a discussion about films that put hair on your junk? Powers Booth and Fred Ward get into a knife fight for Christ's sake!

dave_or_did said...

I'm with Mrespony on Southern Comfort, thats a great movie. For me, Hill's finest hour is Driver though, it's one of the best car chase movies out there and has a cool art-house action crossover thing going on.

"Why is Marina on this cast?"

I ask myself the same thing every time she's on. Grating voice, nothing interesting to say.

Kurt Halfyard said...

Wow, what is with The Marina haters? She is one of the shaper bloggers out there, albeit the boys don't always give her space to talk on this show, the negativity isn't helping anyone. Check back to a few of the earlier shows....

dave_or_did said...

Yeah, what gives? Just because she didn't feel so passionately about these two titles doesn't make her opinion less valid.

Nice post as for me. I'd like to read more about that topic. The only thing your blog needs is a few pictures of any devices.

I've listened to all the previous casts and heard discernible moments of awkwardness following Marina's comments in more than one. No hate, I just think that she is out of her league alongside Jay and Sean. If she is one of the "sharper bloggers" out there then maybe I should keep this thing going. filmwu.blogspot.com

Who listens to these for Sean? I can read my own damn emails.
